Black wiper seal with a stepped profile

Wiper Seals

Moss Seal supplies wiper seals (also called scraper or excluder seals) to protect cylinder rods and the primary seals behind them. Mounted at the outboard end of the gland, the wiper strips contaminants from the rod on the return stroke so abrasive particles and moisture never reach the rod seal, bearing, or fluid. We match wiper profile and material to your rod finish, environment, and stroke conditions, from clean indoor equipment to mobile machinery working in mud, ice, and grit.

ENGINEERING

Cross-section design & operation

A stiff scraping lip rides on the rod and deflects debris outward, while the seal body locates firmly in the gland to hold the lip square to the rod.

Ring styles

The scraping lip is angled outward with a sharp contact edge to shear contaminants off the rod. Single-lip wipers scrape only; double-lip designs add an inner sealing lip that retains a thin oil film and provides a secondary barrier.

How it works

On the extend stroke, the lip lets a lubricating film pass. On the retract stroke, the edge scrapes dirt, dust, and moisture from the rod surface before it enters the gland, keeping the rod seal and fluid clean.

Contamination control

By stopping particles at the entry point, the wiper prevents scoring of the rod, embedding of grit in the primary seal, and contamination of the hydraulic fluid. It also reduces ice and water ingress in outdoor and washdown service.
