Cutaway 3D render of a T-seal: a black elastomer T-section body with tan back-up rings on both sides

T Seals

Moss Seal supplies T-seals as a direct upgrade where an O-ring will not survive the pressure, clearance, or dynamic duty of a gland. The T-shaped elastomer body is fitted with a pair of back-up rings that close the extrusion gap on both sides, giving a seal that resists spiral failure and rolling in reciprocating service while still installing into a standard groove. We match body compound and back-up material to your pressure, temperature, and fluid.

ENGINEERING

Cross-section design & operation

A T-section elastomer body sits between two back-up rings, so the sealing element is supported on both sides and cannot twist in the groove.

Assembly design

The elastomer carries the seal while the back-up rings take the extrusion load. The T-shaped profile locates positively in the groove and holds the back-ups in place, so the set stays square during stroke reversals.

How it works

System pressure loads the body against the sealing surface and the adjacent back-up ring. Because the geometry is symmetrical, the assembly seals equally well in either direction without reconfiguration.

Failure resistance

The squared section resists the rolling and spiral failure that affects O-rings in long-stroke reciprocating service, and the supported gap prevents nibbling at high pressure and wide clearances.

SELECTION

Materials & advantages

5 materials · scroll or use the arrows
NBR

Nitrile

General-purpose body compound for hydraulic oils and water-based fluids.

HNBR

HNBR

Tougher body compound with better heat and sour gas resistance than nitrile.

PTFE back-up rings

Low-friction back-ups with broad chemical resistance, often split for easy installation.

FKM

Fluorocarbon

Body compound for high temperatures and aggressive fluids where nitrile would degrade.

Nylon & PEEK back-ups

Stiffer back-up rings resist extrusion at higher pressures and wider clearance gaps.
