Black rubber-to-metal part with a metal inner sleeve

Rubber to Metal

Moss Seal supplies rubber-to-metal bonded components where an elastomer must be permanently joined to a metal insert, case, or substrate. Bonding during molding creates a joint stronger than the rubber itself, so the part behaves as a single component under pressure, vibration, and thermal cycling. Applications include metal-cased seals, bonded packing elements and hanger seals, bonded washers and gaskets, and custom parts built to your drawing. We match elastomer, metal, surface preparation, and bonding system to the service conditions so the joint holds for the life of the part.

ENGINEERING

Cross-section design & operation

A prepared metal insert is placed in the mold, and the elastomer is bonded to it chemically as it cures, forming a continuous rubber-to-metal joint.

Insert & bond design

Inserts are machined or stamped to your drawing. The elastomer can fully encapsulate the metal or be bonded to selected faces only, with rubber thickness and edge detail at the bond line set to suit the loads and movement the part will see in service.

How it’s made

Inserts are cleaned, blasted or phosphated, and coated with a primer and bonding adhesive. The elastomer is then molded directly onto the insert, and heat and pressure cure the rubber and bond simultaneously so the interface is fully integrated.

Pressure response

A correctly bonded joint fails in the rubber before it fails at the interface. This keeps the elastomer fixed under pressure loading and prevents it from rolling, spinning, or extruding away from the metal in pressure cycling or vibration.
