Cutaway 3D render of a metal C-ring showing its open C-shaped cross-section

Metal C Rings

Moss Seal supplies metal C-rings for service beyond what any elastomer can survive: cryogenic and extreme high temperature, high vacuum, aggressive media, radiation, and very high pressure. The C-shaped section acts as a spring, and the open side can be oriented toward system pressure so the ring is energised by the fluid it is sealing. We supply plated and coated variants matched to flange load, surface finish, and media.

ENGINEERING

Cross-section design & operation

A C-shaped metal section is compressed between flanges and acts as a spring, with a soft plating layer taking up flange surface imperfections.

Section design

Wall thickness and section diameter set the spring rate and the load needed to seat the ring. Silver, gold, PTFE, and nickel platings are selected to conform to the flange finish and to suit the operating environment.

How it works

Flange load compresses the section elastically, and the ring pushes back to maintain contact stress. When the opening faces system pressure, the fluid acts inside the C and forces the legs outward, so the seal energises as pressure rises.

Service limits

Metal C-rings operate where elastomers cannot, across cryogenic through high temperature service, in ultra-high vacuum, and in radiation or aggressive chemical environments that would degrade any polymer.

SELECTION

Materials & advantages

5 materials · scroll or use the arrows

Nickel-based alloys

Age-hardenable nickel alloys retain spring properties at high temperature and resist corrosive media.

Stainless steel

Austenitic stainless grades suit general and cryogenic service where nickel alloys are not required.

Soft metal platings

Silver and gold platings flow into flange surface imperfections under seating load.

PTFE coating

A soft polymer coating that conforms to the flange and resists chemical attack.

Nickel plating

Nickel plating adds a harder, corrosion-resistant surface suited to high-temperature service.
