Lip Seals

Moss Seal supplies spring-loaded lip seals for shafts, rods, and bores in applications that must seal reliably at low pressure as well as high. A garter spring in the heel preloads the sealing lip, maintaining contact at startup and as the seal wears, while system pressure adds load only when needed. We match lip profile, body material, and spring alloy to your pressure, speed, temperature, and fluid, whether supporting routine maintenance or a new equipment design.

ENGINEERING

Cross-section design & operation

A spring cavity between the flared shoulders preloads the sealing lip, maintains contact as the seal wears, and allows pressure to reinforce the seal only when needed.

Cross-section design

The rounded spring cavity sits at the heel of the body. Its garter spring takes up clearance and preserves sealing contact over a longer service life than a plain lip seal.

How it works

At low or zero pressure, spring load supplies the contact force. As pressure rises, it acts on the heel and adds to the spring force in proportion to system demand.

Pressure response

The dual-loading mechanism seals across a wide pressure range while keeping breakaway friction low during idle and startup conditions.

INSTALLATION

Directional installation notes

Pressure-side orientation

Lip Seals are directional — the lip and spring must face the pressure or fluid side of the gland. Shaft or bore surfaces should be free of nicks and finished to the roughness called out on the seal drawing. Inspect the spring for proper seating in its groove before installation to ensure uniform lip loading around the full circumference.
